Full Description

This Old San Juan walking tour offers a delightful journey through the heart of Puerto Rico’s most historic city, perfect for travelers who want to immerse themselves in the rich culture, vibrant architecture, and storied past of San Juan. Ideal for those ready to explore on foot, this tour combines fascinating history with charming stops, providing endless opportunities for beautiful photos and selfies against the backdrop of colorful, centuries-old buildings.

The tour begins at Plaza Colón, where a statue of Christopher Columbus proudly stands, welcoming you to Old San Juan’s historic streets. From there, we visit Parroquia San Francisco, a small church that once played a crucial role in supporting the local community and is still a quiet sanctuary of colonial charm. Next, stroll to the Plaza of Fort San Cristobal, an impressive fortress that defended the city against invasions. Here, you can capture a memorable photo in front of the iconic “Garita” (sentry box) as it gazes out over the majestic Atlantic Ocean.

Continuing, we’ll view from above the colorful and lively La Perla Neighborhood, an iconic spot often featured in music videos and movies. Our next stop, Museo de San Juan Square, was once a bustling market and now serves as a cultural focal point, offering insight into San Juan’s history, alongside the striking Puerto Rico Flag Gate. The tour then takes you to Plaza de Quinto Centenario, where monuments celebrate the island’s unique cultural heritage—a blend of Taíno, Spanish, and African influences that make Puerto Rico truly one of a kind.

The journey continues to the majestic Fort San Felipe del Morro, a massive 16th-century fortress cherished by locals and tourists alike, where families gather to enjoy the scenic views and lush green lawns. Nearby, the Cuartel de Ballajá beckons with its grand square structure, perfect for group photos or panoramic videos, capturing Old San Juan’s colonial splendor.

As we walk deeper into Old San Juan, you’ll see two of the oldest churches in the Americas: Iglesia San José, where the remains of Juan Ponce de León were once held, and the Catedral San Juan Bautista, the final resting place of the famous explorer. We’ll also admire El Convento, originally a nun convent built in 1651, now a luxurious hotel filled with historic charm.

Next, we pass through the iconic Puerta de San Juan, inscribed with "Benedictus qui venit in nomine Domini" ("Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord"). This gate, once the main entrance to the walled city, welcomed dignitaries and celebrated the city’s religious importance. Our stroll then takes us along “La Princesa” Promenade, a scenic path lined with artisans and food kiosks on weekends, leading to La Princesa, now Puerto Rico’s official Tourism Office and a vibrant cultural center.
